Why does MetService have advertising?

Modified on Fri, 16 Dec, 2022 at 12:16 PM

MetService is a State Owned Enterprise, as such we are expected to operate profitably in the same way a privately-owned company would, with all profits returned to the NZ Government.

Although MetService Severe Weather Watches and Warnings, and a some national forecasts are funded through commercial contracts with the Ministry of Transport, much of what you see on metservice.com and our weather apps, is paid for by advertising and sponsorship. This enables us to provide world-leading weather information including; localised forecasts & observations, weather maps, radar imagery, video forecasts and many other useful features beyond what is publicly funded.

We try hard to balance the advertising on our site with the experience of our users. Our aim is to ensure that advertising does not get in the way of the weather message. If you think we have missed that mark, then it’s fair to let us know so we can take a closer look.

If you have encountered a particular ad which you think is unsuitable, please get in touch to let us know where you saw it, and (if possible) send us a screenshot or detailed description of the ad so we can investigate further.
