Why is the forecast in the hourly graph sometimes different from the written forecast?

Modified on Fri, 23 Dec, 2022 at 12:52 PM

The hourly forecast graphs that you see on the app and website are produced by a computer weather modelling system and are not manually edited, as a result they can differ from the written forecast which are prepared and moderated by our experienced forecasters.

There are a few reasons this can be the case, for example, the hourly forecast is specific to a single spot while the written forecast covers an area, in the event of scattered showers, the specific location may miss the showers despite there being rainfall in the are.

These computer model forecasts are useful as a guide, but it is only one of the tools that our forecasters rely on to produce their written forecasts which appear above. In the event that the two forecasts differ, please give precedence to the text forecasts produced by MetService meteorologists.
